The number of people switching their food preferences to a plant based diet is rising. According to an article titled This is How Many Vegans Are in the World Right Now (2020 Update) on WTVOX "Right now, there are about 9.7 million people in the US following a vegetarian-based diet. However, only 1 million of them – that’s approximately 0.5 per cent – lead a pure vegan lifestyle." Clearly, living a plant based lifestyle is on the rise. Today we will discuss cooking substitutions for a plant based diet. This can be used for yourself personally, or even for the holidays if a family member is vegan. As you will see, making the switch is much easier than you would think.


Jack Fruit


The first vegan substitution you can make is jack fruit. According to bbcgoodfood's Top 10 Vegan Substitutes you can substitute Jackfruit for shredded meat. The article also stated that you can find it canned, so it is easy to store in your pantry.


Nut Milk

Nut milk is something that you can find at almost any grocery store now, or you can even make it easily at home! Nut milks are a great substitute for regular milk. According to the article some nut milks are better for different things. The author, Juliet Sear stated "For example, there’s an oat barista milk that definitely works best for making classic frothy coffees."


Flax/ Chia Eggs

The article also discussed how you can use seeds flax and chia seeds as egg substitutes! Sear stated "I prefer to make and use a more simple flax egg for my baking recipes by mixing hot water with flax meal. Chia seeds also work well as an egg substitute."
